There are lots of plants you can forage to make tea – nettles, summer berries, spring berries. But what could be a more perfect tea to transition from Autumn to Winter than a hot apple tea?

Apples are so abundant this time of year, as you’ll know if you or someone you know has an apple tree! I wrote recently on my blog about three different things you can make with apples if you’re bored of apple pie, but one thing I didn’t include was this Turkish Apple Tea.

Apples used to make spiced apple tea So whether you’re foraging your apples from an orchard or a supermarket, follow this simple recipe for the perfect autumnal warmer.

Makes 1 cup

Ingredients

3 apples, quartered
1 orange, quartered (or orange juice)
1 cinnamon stick
1 litre of water (for a higher yield you can add more water, but this will weaken the taste)
2 cloves
Honey or sugar

Spiced Apple Tea Recipe

  1. Chop your fruit into quarters and put everything into a big pan
  2. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer until the apples are really soft. I chose to put a spoonful of honey in while the tea was simmering.
  3. Strain the liquid into a jug through a sieve, squeezing all the goodness out.
  4. Serve with as much sweetener as you like

This tea has a really delicate but distinct flavour, and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised! There was a slight bitter after taste which I think was from the orange peel and pith (which the original recipe said to leave on). I would recommend removing the pith, or just using orange juice to avoid this.

Spiced Apple Tea Recipe Another massive bonus of this tea is that it makes your house smell amazing while it’s simmering!

If you fall in love with this tea, it’s versatile for all seasons. Beef it up with some mulling syrup for Christmas, or enjoy over ice for a refreshing summer thirst quencher.
